Why Hair Fall Is So Common in Pakistan (And What Actually Helps)
Ask almost anyone in Pakistan why their hair is falling, and you will get the same answer: "it is the water." It has become the default explanation repeated by aunties, salons, and half the hair-oil brands on the shelf. But is it actually true, or is it a convenient story that lets the real causes go unaddressed?
As a chemist, we did not want to just repeat what everyone says. So we looked at what the dermatology research actually shows and the honest answer is more layered than "it is the water."

Is Hard Water Really the Cause? Here is What the Research Actually Shows
Hard water water high in dissolved calcium and magnesium, common across much of Pakistan genuinely does affect hair. Controlled studies have measured this directly: hair washed in hard water shows significantly higher mineral deposition than hair washed in distilled water, along with a measurable decrease in hair shaft thickness. Electron microscopy studies have also found that hard water leaves more magnesium buildup on the hair surface, giving strands a rougher, duller texture.
Here is the part most brands leave out: that same research is far less conclusive about whether hard water causes true hair loss from the root. Some studies have found no significant difference in hair's tensile strength or elasticity between hard and soft water exposure. What the evidence consistently supports is that hard water causes surface damage dryness, roughened cuticles, tangling, and breakage which can look and feel like hair fall, especially when broken strands end up in your hairbrush or drain.
The honest takeaway: hard water is a real contributor to damaged, brittle-feeling hair in most Pakistani cities, and it is absolutely worth addressing. But if you are experiencing genuine thinning or shedding from the root, it is rarely the only explanation, and treating it as the sole cause means the real driver often goes unaddressed.

The Other Contributors That Get Less Attention
Vitamin D deficiency. This is far more common in Pakistan than most people realize. A comprehensive meta-analysis of studies conducted across Pakistan found a pooled deficiency prevalence of roughly 78%, with other large studies reporting that over half the population is deficient and nearly two-thirds of women fall below healthy levels despite Pakistan's abundant sunshine. Vitamin D plays a role in the hair follicle's growth cycle, and researchers continue to study its connection to conditions like telogen effluvium (a common type of diffuse hair shedding).
Iron levels. This one is genuinely debated in the research some studies link low iron/ferritin to hair shedding, while others find no meaningful difference between women with hair loss and those without. Rather than assuming iron is "the" answer, it is worth having levels checked by a doctor if hair fall is significant, rather than guessing.
Heat, humidity, and pollution. Extreme summer heat, high humidity in coastal cities, and dust/pollution levels in urban areas all place ongoing stress on the scalp and hair shaft, compounding whatever else is going on.
Stress-related shedding (telogen effluvium). A well-documented, usually temporary form of hair shedding triggered by physical or emotional stress, illness, or major life changes often appearing 2–3 months after the triggering event, which makes people miss the connection.
Genetics (androgenetic alopecia). The most common cause of progressive, pattern-based thinning in both men and women, driven primarily by genetics and hormone sensitivity, not water quality.

What Actually Helps And Why We Built Root Nectar This Way

When to See a Dermatologist, Not Just Try an Oil
Some signs are worth a proper medical opinion rather than more DIY remedies:
- Sudden or patchy hair loss, rather than gradual thinning
- Visible scalp redness, flaking, or pain
- Hair fall alongside other symptoms like fatigue, weight changes, or irregular periods
- No improvement after 3-4 months of a consistent, well-rounded routine
